NPBC newsletter November 2017

The latest news from our friends at Newcastle Pregnancy and Baby Centre

"Hello! I can't believe how quickly this year is disappearing! I already have my 2018 diary – but first let's enjoy what this year has left to offer us!

Dates for your Diary...

Tiny Lives Nearly New Sale

18th Nov 10.00am-1.00pm at Trinity Church, High Street, Gosforth, NE3 4AG

Nearly new baby stuff to buy and sell and raise money for a good cause as well. November's sale concentrates on toys to help with that Christmas panic...

Christmas Party!

2nd Dec 1.00pm-4.00pm St Charles Church hall, Gosforth

Shave or Sponsor Challenge!

Some of you will know Jenny from our baby massage, baby yoga and twinkle toes classes. Jenny has teamed up with Della Clark who is the face painter at our Christmas Party, and together they are going to shave their heads on 25th Nov to raise money for Samuel.

Samuel has attended many of Jenny's classes and has severe quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy. Samuel's parents are hoping to raise enough to take Samuel to the world renowned NAPA centre in the USA to help Samuel's quality of life.

If you would like to support Jenny and Della to raise funds for Samuel you can visit https://www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/just4children/saveforsamuel

or you may want to join them and shave your head!

You can see the results of the shave because Jenny and Della will be shivering with bald heads at our Christmas party!

Focus On...

Each Newsletter we will focus on one of our practitioners. This month is the turn of Brenda McLackland who runs Happy Babies for NPBC.

Brenda was brought up in the North East, but left for Cardiff to train as a clinical psychologist. In 2001 she returned, with two young children, and worked as a consultant in the NHS mainly with parents and families.

'One thing I noticed”, says Brenda, 'is that whilst we spend loads of time making sure mothers-to-be are physically healthy, or looking at the role of dads around the time of the birth, we often overlook their emotional wellbeing and need to 'connect' with their new babies. And yet it seemed to me that a lot of the problems experienced by new parents were about being overwhelmed by feelings or a failure to bond with baby. I felt I had to do something to help'.

This realisation led Brenda to develop Comfort Zone, an easy to understand and effective way of managing the challenges of being a new parent, leaving more time for parents to enjoy their new baby’s company.

'It’s really all about learning strategies that you can use to communicate more effectively with your baby, which helps them learn and develop, and finding ways to ensure that relationships within the new family are stable and happy”, says Brenda. “I work with parents on their own, with a partner or in small groups. The approach is practical and down to earth, and we try to have a bit of fun along the way.'
