World Book Day - DIY Costume Ideas!

There’s nothing that strikes fear into the hearts of most parents than…World Book Day!  Or the realisation that you’ve completely forgotten about World Book Day and it’s tomorrow and you haven’t sorted out a costume and it’s too late for Amazon Prime!!

Don’t panic!  Help is at hand – we’ve put together all our handy, last minute costume ideas that you can throw together and just using bits and pieces from around the house. 

  • Pirate


    Books: Pirates love underpants by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort, The Pirates Next Door by Jonny Duddle, Ten Little Pirates by Mike Brownlow, Pirates (Horrible Histories) by Terry Deary

    • Scarf to tie around their head 
    • Black joggers or trousers (cut ragged edges if you don’t need them again)
    • Stripey t-shirt or jumper
    • Eye patch – cut a piece of card into a patch shape to fit your little one, colour it black, pierce small holes in either side and add some string to tie it around the back of the head
    • Add any other pirate accessories you might have at home (sword, parrot/bird teddy, treasure, toilet roll as a telescope)
  • Stick Man

    Book: Stick Man by Julia Donaldson

    • Brown trousers
    • Brown t-shirt or jumper
    • Cut out a leaf shape from cardboard and colour green – attached to a brown/dark headband or hat so it sticks up in the middle of their head
    • Grab a stick from the garden to carry
  • Mr Men

    Book: Mr Bump by Jim Hargreaves

    • Blue joggers
    • Blue t-shirt or jumper
    • Add bandages and plasters here and there – including their head, hands and fingers
  • Fairytale Characters

    Books: Rapunzel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks

    For Rapunzel or Goldilocks:

    • Plait together some wool – either as two yellow plaits for Goldilocks or one long one for Rapunzel – and tie off at the ends
    • Attach them to the hair with hair clips
    • Smart dress with white socks

    Red Riding Hood - the Woodcutter:

    • Check shirt
    • Jeans
    • Boots
    • Cut out axe from an old cardboard box


    • Old t-shirt/top made to look scruffy
    • Old skirt made to look scruffy
    • Dust pan and brush
  • Roald Dahl

    Books: Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, George's Marvellous Medicine, BFG

    For Matilda:

    • A blue dress (or school uniform will do)
    • Ribbon in the hair
    • A pile of books under their arm

    For Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:

    • Create a ‘golden ticket’ from a piece of cardboard
    • Create a ‘Wonka bar’ from a piece of cardboard
    • Red dress/top and skirt, white socks and black shoes for Veruca Salt
    • Tatty trousers and jumper for Charlie

    For George’s Marvellous Medicine:

    • Normal clothes (you can always add a ‘George’ name tag to the front)
    • A big saucepan (you don’t mind them taking to school!) labelled ‘MEDICINE’
    • A wooden spoon

    For the BFG:

    • Cut out two ‘ears’ from cardboard and attach to a headband
    • Smart trousers
    • White t-shirt or shirt
    • Waistcoat
    • Sandals

    For Sophie from the BFG:

    • Pjs and slippers
