10 things to know when swimming with your baby or toddler

There are many things to consider when taking a baby swimming...

We know that swimming is one of the most amazing experiences you can share with your baby or toddler. It is one of the few things you and your little one can enjoy together and although there are many things to consider when taking a baby or toddler swimming - it's well worth it!

  1. Babies can be taken in to the water from birth - they do not need to have had their immunisations.
  2. Going to a class provides support and enables you to relax & enjoy the experience. Good teachers are trained to understand the needs of both parent and baby.
  3. Any pool you choose should be heated to at least 30°C, clean and well managed. If you can't find a warm pool, use an award-winning neoprene Baby Wraps or Wetsuits, which help to keep babies warm in the water and prevents the chills when getting out of the water.
  4. If a baby is tired or hungry, then they are unlikely to enjoy swimming. Try not to feed babies less than 20-30 mins before their lesson to give time for their tummy to settle. Breast or bottle-fed babies can be fed for a few minutes during the class if needed). Babies on solids should just have a light snack an hour before swimming.
  5. A double nappy must be worn to prevent unwanted leaks into the pool. A happy nappy should be worn on top of a disposable or reusable swim nappy. This needs to be a good fit around the waist and the legs to ensure that all 'little accidents' stay inside the nappy.
  6. Focus on your baby and try to stay relaxed. Your teacher will help you with finding the correct position for your little one's needs. Remember to smile as if you smile your baby or toddler is more likely to smile too.
  7. Don't worry if your little one cries- this is very normal! Your teacher will be able to support you and try to help you settle him or her.
  8. Bring a changing mat or spare towel to lay your baby on when getting changed before and after lesson.
  9. When your baby or toddler gets out of the water they may be cold, tired & hungry! Have a large hooded towel ready on poolside to wrap around them, and a hat for their head (even on a warm day, for the first few minutes of going outside) and something to eat. Snacks are a definite must for older babies and toddlers!
  10. Finally - enjoy the peace and quiet when you get home as your baby has a wonderful sleep!
