Puddle Ducks Water Safety Pyjama Week: Fun, Safety and Lifesaving Skills for Babies and Children

Puddle Ducks Water Safety Pyjama Week: Fun, Safety and Lifesaving Skills for Babies and Children

Puddle Ducks Water Safety Pyjama Week is more than just a fun swimming lesson; it’s an essential way for babies, toddlers, and children to develop confidence, water safety awareness, personal survival, and lifesaving skills.

That’s why we encourage all our swimmers, from infants to young children, to take part in Water Safety Pyjama Week three times a year as part of their regular swimming programme.

Parents often ask: “What does wearing pyjamas have to do with swimming?” The answer lies in real-life water safety and survival skills.

What Is Water Safety Pyjama Week?

All our swimmers take part in a special swimming lesson where children wear pyjamas over their swimwear. This carefully structured activity helps swimmers experience the sensation of being in the water fully clothed, under the supervision of trained swimming teachers.

The aim is not to encourage children to jump into the water fully dressed. Instead, it helps children understand how the water feels after an accidental fall, and reassures them that they can still float, turn, return to the side and swim safely in clothes.

Why Swimming in Clothes Matters

Learning to swim in clothes teaches children important personal survival skills, which are the building blocks of life-saving awareness. During Water Safety Pyjama Week, children:

  • Experience swimming with extra weight from clothing
  • Learn floating, turning, and controlled movement
  • Build confidence after unexpected water entry
  • Understand how to help themselves, and others, safely in water

These experiences complement our regular lessons in which personal survival skills are intrinsically woven every week.

Is Pyjama Week Safe for Babies and Toddlers?

Absolutely. Each Pyjama Week session is adapted to suit age and ability, with gentle, reassuring activities that focus on confidence and comfort. Babies and toddlers are fully supported, ensuring a safe, positive learning environment.

Pyjama Week and STA Water Safety Week

Our summer Pyjama Week aligns with the STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) Water Safety Week. We encourage parents to explore STA resources, including real-life stories that highlight the importance of early swimming lessons and water awareness.

These resources help families reinforce water safety at home and strengthen children’s understanding of potential risks.

Charity Pyjama Week: Swimming Lessons That Give Back

Every autumn, Puddle Ducks hosts its Charity Pyjama Week, where local teams across the UK raise money for community causes.

Families are invited to make a voluntary donation, and many of our young swimmers raise sponsorship money while completing their personal survival lesson in pyjamas.

Our swimmers and families have raised more than £400,000 for charity, making a real difference in communities nationwide.

Why Parents Love Pyjama Week

Parents consistently report that Pyjama Week helps their children:

  • Feel calmer and more confident in water
  • Understand how to respond if they accidentally fall in
  • Enjoy swimming lessons while learning vital water safety skills

Pyjama Week is a unique and invaluable part of the Puddle Ducks swimming programme.
